Breaking Down the Walls of Grief:

Expressing and Reflecting Ourselves through Music 
 

      Presenter:

      Sharon R. Boyle, M.M., MT-BC, Associate Professor of Music Therapy at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College 
       

      Learning Objectives:

    1. Participants will gain an awareness of how the elements of music affect us both individually and culturally, in all health domain areas
    2. Participants will gain an awareness of how music can both reflect our emotional state and also allow expression of feelings and thoughts non-verbally
    3. Participants will learn functional uses of music that can be applied in their lives as they work through various grief issues
    4. Participants will learn how music can be combined with other artistic mediums (movement, drawing, writing, etc.) to aid in emotional and self-expression
    5. Participants will gain an awareness of the importance of sharing music experiences with others for the purpose of support

Using Guided Imagery as a Source of Comfort and Exploration When Grieving

 
 

      Presenter: Suzanne Harris, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist 
 
 

      Learning Objectives:

    1. To present information on the guided imagery process in general with an emphasis on the benefits of use for persons experiencing grief
    2. Provide resource information on available guided imagery audiotapes and books
    3. Experiential component: to lead participants through both an unstructured  and more formal guided imagery process

Gathering Spiritual Sustenance through Art Making during a Time of Loss   
 

      Presenter: Kathy Gotshall, ATR-BC, LCSW 
 

      Learning Objectives:

    1. Participants will be able to articulate what is the difference between the art making process and art therapy.
    2. Participants will learn through their own experience how the art making process is valuable for persons who have experienced loss.
    3. Participants will learn thru their own experience how art making can lead to exploration of spirituality.
    4. Participants will be able to observe within a group setting how the art making experience, which is facilitated to help clients explore or embrace their spirituality during the grieving process.

Drawing Through Loss: Telling Your Story with Line and Color

                  Zann Carter, Poet and Fiber Artist 
 

      Learning Objectives:

    1. Participants will understand how drawing can be utilized to cope with stress, release difficult emotions and honor a loved one.
    2. Participants will gain confidence in their own abilities to create expressive art.
    3. Participants will learn that creative expression can be made an integral part of self-care following loss, with simple materials and minimal preparation.
    4. Participants will begin to construct a vocabulary of personal visual symbols to tell their stories.
    5. Participants will have hands-on drawing experiences, choosing from a variety of drawing media and materials and several types of expressive art projects.
