Maternal Health
Clinic’s Margy Fauber Honored
Union
Hospital’s Maternal
Health Clinic/Maple Center Doula
Program is pleased to announce the winner of the 2006
Penny Simkin Award. This Doula Spirit and Mentorship
Award honors doulas who show extraordinary doula spirit
through their outstanding efforts in promoting and
caring for doulas and childbearing women in their
community. This year’s winner of this prestigious award
is Marguerite Fauber (left in photo).
Margy was
nominated by several of her colleagues and doula
clients. Margy had been the Doula Coordinator for the
Union Hospital Maternal Health Clinic for approximately
five years. Margy’s compassion and nurturing spirit make
her a natural choice when choosing a recipient for this
award. Doulas support women prenatally and during labor,
and through this experience they are able to mentor to
women by teaching them life skills. Margy is
instrumental in teaching the doulas how to be great
additions to the birth team. The word “doula” comes from
the ancient Greek, meaning “Woman’s servant.” Doulas
know how to help a woman in labor feel better. Today’s
doulas are much more diverse than their predecessors.
Doulas are educated and knowledgeable about childbirth
Margy, along with Mary Huffman, became doulas about
eleven years ago and went on to become doula trainers.
Margy and Mary are local RNs and childbirth educators
who introduced doulas to the Wabash Valley in 1995. The
Oakley Foundation and Indiana State Health
Department are current financial supporters of the
Doula program |
